I just want to double-check…
In this video at ThinkProgress, is Bush really saying that he purposefully lied to reporters – as in knowingly misled them and fed false information to the public through them – because he wanted to change the subject?
Okay.
Just checking.

Yup. Oh, and you know all that good progress Bush was citing in Iraq before the election? Yeah, not so much that either.

Worse yet, he lied to us because he wanted to change the subject for political reasons: “The reason why is I did not want to make [I think he means “announce”]a major decision in the final days of the campaign.”

He quickly backtracked and said there were other reasons—which are maybe actually valid reasons—but yeah, he came out and said he lied to the press so it wouldn’t affect the Republican campaign.
Which is sort of ironic, when you think about it. It’s the past six years of lies that hurt the Republicans most in this campaign.

What I think is really funny is this: if Bush had fired Rumsfeld when Fiasco came out, he might have taken the wind out of the “Republicans can’t admit mistakes” sails and kept at least the Senate.
